Silica: Fundamentals for Controlling Exposure-Virtual

Did you know that a particulate of respirable silica-dust is 100 times smaller than a grain of sand? Did you know that chronic unprotected exposure to respirable silica dust can lead to silicosis, lung cancer, and kidney disease? Over 2.3 million workers each year are exposed to respirable silica at work, many of whom are not adequately protected from breathing in respirable silica. This course will help employers recognize and understand the hazard of respirable silica, the required engineering controls and work practices to protect workers, and how to implement an effective Silica Exposure Control Plan. This course addresses BOTH General Industry and Construction, and is intended for managers/supervisors, superintendents, leads/foremen, safety personnel and trainers. Topics include:
  • Overview of respirable crystalline silica
  • Exposure assessment and environmental sampling
  • OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134)
  •  Engineering controls and work practices
  • Regulated areas
  • Respiratory protection
  • Medical surveillance
  • Exposure control plans
  • Training and communication
