Scaffolding: Fundamentals for the Competent Person - Virtual

Whenever any worker is permitted to work from scaffolding, OSHA requires that employers ensure scaffold-systems are evaluated and inspected by a competent person. Not only must the competent person understand the design, capacity and limitations of the systems being used, but also ensure that assembly and use are in accordance with 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L (which applies to both General industry and Construction). This course is intended for competent persons, as well as superintendents, supervisors, foremen, and safety personnel, to understand design and loading principles, assembly and use requirements, and responsibilities of the designated competent person(s). Topics include:
    • Types of scaffolding
    • Design, loading and capacity
    • Environmental factors
    • Foundation, anchorage and support
    • Assembly and use
    • Fall protection
    • Competent person responsibilities
    • General requirements for all scaffolding
    • Requirements for specific types of scaffolding
    • Requirements for erectors and dismantlers

This course does not include “hands on” training required for employers.

Note: The SD Safety Council recommends competent persons, trainers and supervisors renew their training every three years to remain apprised of changes and updates.

See “Aerial “Scissors” Lifts (MEWPS): Fundamentals for the Trainer” for specific training addressing “powered mobile-scaffolds” (e.g. scissors-lifts).
