Lockout/Tagout: Fundamentals for Hazardous Energy
Did you know that failing to use proper and effective lock-out/tag-out procedures is one of the leading causes of serious injuries to workers throughout the United States? Did you know that machine guarding is one of the most commonly issued citations by OSHA? Did you know that lock-out/tag-out applies to more than just machines and equipment? How do you know whether a disconnect switch can be used as a lock-out/tag-out device? Every year, many workers are injured while servicing, repairing and maintaining equipment while removing safeguards without ensuring all potentially hazardous energy has been effectively controlled. Before removing safeguards and working within the “danger zone” of equipment, workers must ensure all energy is eliminated. This course will help develop an understanding of basic lock-out/tag-out principles, navigate through various regulatory and design standards (e.g. OSHA, ANSI, ASME), and strengthen an employers ability to develop step-by-step procedures to achieve a “zero-energy” state. This course addresses BOTH General Industry and Construction, and is intended for operators, technicians, maintenance, engineers, managers/supervisors, superintendents, leads/foremen, safety personnel and trainers. Topics include:
- Principles of lock-out/tag-out
- Assessment of energy sources
- Disconnects and LOTO devices
- Developing written procedures
- Periodic inspections and annual audits
- Group/Team LOTO and multiple shifts
- Multi-employer situations
