9:00 - 10:00 am SESSION 1 - Understanding the Importance of Implementing, Disseminating, and Enforcing workplace rules.
Let the lawyers at Boyce Law Firm help you understand why enforcing a rule is just as important as having the rule in the first place as they explain the test applied by the South Dakota Supreme Court to workplace safety violations and provide practical guidance on how to protect your business and your employees. From implementing the rule, informing your employees of the rule, enforcing the rule, and completing an investigation following an incident or accident - this presentation will answer all your questions.
PRESENTERS: Attorney/Partner Charles A. Larson & Attorney/Partner Laura K Hensley, Boyce Law Firm, LLP, Sioux Falls, SD

10:00 - 10:30 am Break and Vendor Time

10:30 - 11:30 am SESSION 2 - OSHA Update
Eric Wollan will discuss the top 10 violations and how you should protect yourself and your employees from these serious hazards. He will discuss the enforcement programs in the general and construction industries including warehousing operations, falls in all industries, trenching & excavation, and heat illness prevention. He will discuss information regarding the type of fatalities and serious injuries that OSHA is seeing in the State of South Dakota. Question and answer session to follow.
PRESENTER: Eric Wollan, Compliance Assistance Specialist. OSHA Region 8, Sioux Falls Area office.

11:30 am - 12:30 pm Lunch and Vendor Time

12:30 - 1:30 pm SESSION 3 - Next Level Safety Culture
We know that 70% of change initiatives fail and that culture is sum of individual journeys. To take your culture for safety to the next level requires that you understand the science of people and the art of change. Join this session to gain insights on the specific, transformational steps that will capture the hearts and minds of team members to elevate performance in your business of safety.
PRESENTER: Chief Vision Officer and Partner, Rana DeBoer, Volt Strategy, Sioux Falls

1:30 - 2:00 pm Break and Vendor Time

2:00 - 3:00 pm SESSION 4 - Introduction to Industrial Hygiene
Increase your knowledge of industrial hygiene to help you prevent the development of occupational disease and injury in the workplace. We will define how industrial hygiene can complement and help complete your company safety program by starting to look at how you can Identify, Evaluate, and Control the various hazards/agents, which generally fall into Chemical/Physical/Biological Agents, as well as the primary routes of entry into the body, including Respiratory, Skin Absorption, Ingestion, Injection, and Eye/Ear Absorption. We will gain an introduction to some key anatomy/physiology aspects, some key regulatory issues, as well as some focused professional societies and certifications.
PRESENTER: Professor, Industrial Engineering Department, Carter Kerk, PhD, PE, CSP, CPE, South Dakota Mines, Rapid City, SD

3:00 - 4:00pm SESSION 5 - Managing Safety in a Bilingual Workplace
In a bilingual workplace, language and cultural barriers can contribute to miscommunications and on-the-job incidents and injuries. When you are managing workers whose first language is not English, it is your job to ensure they understand their duties, company policies, and safety procedures. Multilingual safety training and communication doesn’t require a complete overhaul of your safety program, but you will need to make some strategic decisions for implementation along the way.
PRESENTER: Occupational Safety & Health Manager, Trent Koppes, South Dakota Safety Council, Sioux Falls
