CREATING AN EMERGENCY TRAVEL SURVIVAL KIT Winter storms can include snow, ice, dangerously cold temperatures and hazardous driving conditions. Every year, drivers are stranded in severe weather. To protect yourself and your family, organize an emergency survival kit to be carried in your car, especially during the winter months. Your kit should include as many of the following items as possible:
Blanket
Extra clothing
Shovel
Sand
Tire chains
Candy or energy bars
Jumper cables
First aid kit
Flashlight and extra batteries
Portable radio/extra batteries
Matches
Brightly colored cloth | | To be tied to the antenna, a window, or on top of the car to be spotted by police or others. |
Long-burning candle and cup | | For melting snow for drinking water. (Eating snow lowers internal body temperature.) Do not sleep while candle is burning. Open window slightly on side away from wind. |
